Art in Parks

The Art Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Park District Art Advisory Committee is to enhance the cultural and aesthetic quality of life in Oak Park by integrating art throughout the Park District. The Art Advisory Committee will:

  • Discuss matters related to the fostering and dissemination of art throughout the
    Park District.
  • Recommend to the Park District Board an annual designation of funds to the Artworks Acquisition and Maintenance Fund for the acquisition of new art, if any, and the repair and maintenance of the existing art collection.
  • Maintain a detailed inventory and record of all existing art in the Park District.
  • Inspect the condition of existing artworks, at a minimum, on an annual basis.
  • Provide public education on existing artworks throughout the Park District.
  • Provide expertise in the area of art and knowledge of the fine arts.
  • Act as a resource in area related to art and the arts in general.
  • Work with the Public Advisory Commission of the Village of Oak Park, the Oak Park Area Arts Council, and other public and private entities and individuals on art related activities.
  • Solicit, as well as establish policies and guidelines to facilitate and encourage the
contribution of funds to the Park District Artworks Acquisition and Maintenance
Fund and/or loans of artwork to the Park District.

Call for Entries

The Park District Art Advisory Committee, which oversees the Park District art collection and placement of art in the parks, has chosen several park locations around the village for public sculpture. This call for entries is an opportunity to showcase national artists in an internationally visited community.

Although we are primarily looking for large works, we have established sites in the parks where pedestrian paths parallel possible art locations and allow for views of smaller works as well. Each installation will be in place for 12-36 months. The selected works will be publicized by the Park District, including display on the Park District website. Based on electronic material submitted by the artist, appropriate descriptions of the artists and their work, and a link to his/her own Web site, will be displayed on the Park District website. A contract with the artist would be required.

Artists are responsible for providing descriptions and images of work in electronic format.

Application

Guidelines for Submission

Stipend: Potential stipends will be negotiated with artist. Every effort will be made to publicize the work with the local media. Open to all artists 18 or older. All media considered. $25 non-refundable fee must accompany the Application (see above). Selected finalists will be notified by mail.

Liability: Every precaution is taken in handling entries. All work is insured during the installation process and while the work is on display in the Park District. Shipping insurance is the artist’s responsibility.

Return of the Work: Upon closing of the exhibition, work must be picked up by the artists themselves, unless specific arrangements have been made between the artist and the Park District. All shipped artwork will be returned in its original container with pre-paid label. The rights of and duties of artists and the Park District are more fully explained in the Art Advisory Committee Guidelines for Submission.
